Aida Fabric Count and Finished Cross Stitch Size
Fabric count tells you how many fabric squares fit into one inch. A 14 count Aida has 14 squares per inch; 16 count has 16; 18 count has 18. The same chart becomes smaller on higher-count fabric because more stitches fit into each inch.
Calculate finished size
Divide the design width and height in stitches by the fabric count. For example, an 84 × 70 stitch design on 14 count Aida finishes at about 6 × 5 inches before framing allowance. On 16 count fabric, the same chart finishes at about 5.25 × 4.4 inches. Colorful Apple Tree at 110 × 105 works out at about 7.9 × 7.5 inches on 14 count.
Add working fabric
The stitched area is not the same as the fabric cut size. Add at least 3 inches on every side for holding, hooping, framing, or finishing. That means adding 6 inches to both the finished width and finished height when you cut fabric.
Which count should a beginner choose?
Fourteen count Aida is widely available and easy to see, which makes it a practical first choice. Sixteen count can look a little finer, while 18 count is smaller and may be harder on tired eyes. If you want a compact first project, choose a small cross-stitch pattern and check the finished-size line before buying.
Once you know the finished size, how much fabric to buy adds the margins for hooping and framing, and how many skeins of floss covers the thread.
